Primary School Welcome

Dear Parents,

The excitement of the new school year is upon us! A very warm welcome back to all returning families and special welcome to the 105 new students and their families joining our ISZL community.

I am sure your homes are filled with positive anticipation of beginning school, along with this comes some nervous energy related to arriving on the first day, meeting the teachers and reconnecting with old friends and making new friends.

Our passionate and dedicated teachers and assistant teachers, who have been actively preparing at school this week, understand the needs of children who come from globally mobile families. They will be focused in the first weeks of school, on personalizing each child’s school experience, developing a sense of belonging in their new class group, forming friendships and ensuring children feel happy at school. Human connectivity is the single most important factor in ensuring happiness. When children feel connected and supported they have the optimal conditions for engaged learning.

It is our strong desire as a school to work in partnership with you as parents to ensure every child has this experience at ISZL. Your class teacher is there to support your child and family. Please connect with your teacher personally to establish a positive foundation for this partnership that will grow throughout the year. Your child’s learning and achievement are important to us, so please feel confident in approaching the school with any concerns.

Looking After Personal Property
Please ensure that all personal belongings are clearly marked with the student’s name. We encourage students to be responsible for their own property. Despite the measures that we have put in place, the amount of lost property that remains at school is a concern. Please assist your child to look for lost items in the lost property room on the top floor of the Rigi Building. It is open every Monday and Wednesday from 8:30-9:00.

Short-Term Student Absence from School
The school kindly requests that parents inform the class/homeroom teacher and the school office of absences before 8:50. A single email copied to both works best. Contacting the school if your child is sick or late will assist us to complete the attendance efficiently. The office can be contacted at office.zug@iszl.ch or by telephone on 041 768 29 00.

As student safety is of the highest priority, staff must account for every child at the beginning of the school day. For requests for an extended absence from school, please refer to Student Attendance, Conduct and Behaviour section of the Zug Campus Handbook on ISZL’s Parent Portal.

Parking – Drop Off and Pick Up
The school car parks are always extremely busy during drop-off and pick-up times. This will be exacerbated during the first weeks of school. The safety of our students and all car park users is our priority. Patience and courtesy on the part of all drivers will greatly assist in providing a calm and happy start and end to the school day for everyone. We ask that you follow the directions of the Site Manager and his team, who aim to ensure a smooth process.

Please note: the one-way traffic flow system will operate in the morning for the first two weeks of school from 8:15 - 9:15 and in the afternoon from 15:00 - 16:00 all year. Please read the Traffic Flow / Parking Updates which gives precise details of timings and the one-way system for the first two weeks of school only.

Physical Education (PE)
Students will require a PE kit, which consists of the school team t-shirt, a pair of comfortable shorts and gymnastic slippers for Early Years 2 to Grade 1 and running shoes/trainers for Grades 2 – 5. Only light-coloured soles are acceptable.

Swimming
The swimming programme is for students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 and will begin from Wednesday 21 August, aside from Kindergarten. They will start their swimming programme on 29 October 2019. Kindergarten classes will be on a weekly rotation with longer sessions. All students require a swimming costume, towel and a bathing cap if your child has long hair. These should be kept in a small bag for easy care. Students are taken by school bus to the Lättich pool in Baar. Please look out for further communication from the PE teachers.

First Day of School – What to bring
Please refer to the Zug Campus Handbook which can be accessed on the ISZL website.
