International Award Scheme
Students from ISZL have participated in The International Award Scheme Programme since 2005 and it is pleasing to note that the numbers continue to steadily grow. It is worth noting that the IAS consolidates activities that students may already be involved in, with the extra incentive that participants have the opportunity of achieving an internationally recognised certificate.
What is The International Award Scheme?
The International Award Scheme was first introduced in Britain in 1956 as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award as a means of encouraging and motivating young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to become involved in a balanced programme of voluntary self-development activities. It is estimated that more than 5 million young people in more than 100 countries have been motivated to undertake the Award.
The Award concept is one of individual challenge. It presents young people with a balanced, non-competitive programme of voluntary activities that encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves and service to their community.
There are 3 levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold
There are 4 sections to be completed at each level:
- Community Service – learn how to give useful service to others.
- Skill – to encourage the development of personal interests and practical skills.
- Physical Recreation – to encourage participation in physical recreation and improvement of performance.
- Expeditions – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery.
All participants select Service, Skill and Physical Recreation components to qualify for the Award. Additionally each level (Bronze, Silver and Gold) has requirements that must be fulfilled before the participant is allowed to take part in the expedition. The expeditions will typically take place within Switzerland, as we are very fortunate geographically with what is available. In addition there will be an optional overseas expedition (Corsica 2010/Kilimanjaro 2011). The number of places available is limited for these trips and IAS participants will have preference. These requirements will be clarified with all participants so they are fully aware of the expectations. It is vital that all participants exhibit a role of responsibility and independence while participating in the Award. We welcome parents to encourage and support their child, but the main aim is to foster greater independence, awareness and responsibility from participants.
