Sports at ISZL
At ISZL, we believe that physical activity is necessary for the maintenance of the health and fitness of the students. The athletics programme highlights development of a students’ physical skills, their cooperative interaction with others, and the discovery and understanding of themselves and their limits. Physical Education is a compulsory part of the curriculum for students in the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme.
ISZL values the intrinsic benefit of athletics participation and the spirit of team play. Good sportsmanship is highly valued and emphasised at ISZL. Coaches and teachers are role models for our student athletes, fostering positive attitudes, an atmosphere conducive to teamwork and a respect of rules. While we take pride in being successful in our events, we don’t subscribe to the philosophy of winning at any cost. ISZL strongly discourages all pressures that may lead to unsportsmanlike values and conduct. We ask all parents to help instil this quality in our athletes by setting the best example at athletic events.
ISZL offers a wide variety of sports clubs and teams at competitive and non-competitive levels. Many events are hosted at regional and even international locations. Many students are also members of local Swiss sports teams and clubs to further their practise.
In the lower years, organised events such as Games Day and Sports Day are planned for students in addition to numerous indoor and outdoor planned sports and activities. Swimming lessons are scheduled on a regular basis at pools near the Zug Campus.
In the Middle School, extra-curricular sports include soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, skiing, track and field, volleyball, softball and golf. Students also are encouraged to participate in recreational clubs that focus on climbing, running, uni-hockey and yoga.
At the High School, competitive sports include soccer, volleyball, rugby, basketball, swimming, skiing, track and field, tennis, softball and golf. Numerous clubs are also organised seasonally and include sailing, kayaking, running, fitness, dance and yoga.
It is our goal to offer participation to all our students while also developing and selecting competitive and successful teams that will represent ISZL in events in and around Switzerland including Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS), Sports Council of International Schools (SCIS) and European Sports Conference (ESC) events and tournaments.
