The Arts
The arts are an important part of student life at the Riverside Campus of ISZL. The four disciplines of visual art, dance, drama and music provide a medium through which students can explore, understand and develop their creative abilities. Students learn how to express themselves through the elements of movement, sound, image and word. Students develop their skills in performance, presentation, communication and collaborative work. Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with technology and use it either as a creative tool or as a means of further developing their work.
The arts provide a rich resource for students to investigate different cultures and societies, both contemporary and historical. Students are encouraged to research, analyse, reflect, make connections and develop their ability to make critical and aesthetic judgements.
In grade 8 students will study all four art subjects as part of a rotational curriculum. This offers an introduction to all four disciplines and provides students with an opportunity to develop a solid foundation of technical and conceptual skills.
In Grades 9 and 10 students will choose one of the four art subjects as a two year IB MYP course. In Grades 11 and 12 students have the opportunity of studying IB visual art, AP studio art, pre-AP studio art, and advanced classes in drama and music.
For further information on these courses please read the course outlines.
There are several concerts, presentations, exhibitions and shows throughout the year where students can share their work and demonstrate their talents.
A wide range of activities in the arts are also offered as part of the extra-curricular programme. The activities that ran last year were art club, choir, rock band, and dance club. Art club and choir ran for the whole year, whereas rock band and dance club took place over one semester. In addition, the school produced a musical which was written by the Drama 4 class. Many students participated in the musical as an extra-curricular activity. Some acted, some took care of the backstage area by managing props and costumes, some performed the music, and some designed and created the set.
