The kayaking activity starts the first week of school and lasts until the October break. Canoeing and kayaking skills will be taught by Mr. Walker and Andrew Walker (both instructors for the British Canoe Union) on Mondays after school. The number of students who can practice in this activity is limited and students can do the activity either in the fall or in the spring. Sailing
Tuesdays, 16:15-18:15
Member of staff: Mr Lordet and Mr McCowan
Location: Lake
The sailing activity starts the first week of school, is every Tuesday and lasts until the week after October break. We have five Lasers and students sail in pairs on each boat. Therefore, the maximum number of students who can practice this activity is 10. We recommend that students wear old running shoes and comfortable clothes. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory when students are sailing. When the weather is cold, students should wear a wetsuit or dress warmly. The activity also takes place after Easter Break, and finishes at the end of the school year. However, students can do the activity either in the fall or in the spring. We are looking forward to seeing you on the water!

Model United Nations
Tuesdays, 16:15 – 17:15
Member of staff: Mr. Kandelaars
Model United Nations participants engage in an authentic simulation of the United Nations system by learning about the UN system, the skills of debate, compromise, conflict resolution and negotiation. MUN team members have fun learning about the workings of world diplomacy through the lens of current events. The THIMUN conference will be held in The Hague from 22 – 29 January.
Student Council
During Lunch, day to be determined
Member of staff: Mr. Monk and Mr. Rubin
The ISZL Student Council’s purpose is to explore and exercise democracy through leadership. Students have the opportunity to shape their new campus through creating and discussing ideas with their peers and other members of the Student Council, and transform those ideas into rules, policies, and practices.
The Student Council also works collaboratively with the Principal, Assistant Principals, and staff to create student-centered programs focused on advancing ISZL’s mission of respect, becoming motivated and concerned global citizens, and developing a commitment to achievement.
The Student Council will meet once a week during lunch, and will be guided by the Student Council President. Mr. Monk and Mr. Mota will lend their support in helping students to lead their school to create an academically-focused and socially balanced learning environment.

This is an opportunity for students to either gain an extra session in the art studios to work on their art projects or to be introduced to a variety of print making techniques using our wonderful new printing press! Be warned printmaking is a very messy business and students should bring and old shirt to cover their clothes or ensure the wear one of our aprons.

Film Making Activity
Monday afternoons after school
Member of staff: Ms. Gray and Ms. Stevenson
Location: Meet in one of the Art Rooms
What's involved? A short description:
This activity starts with the making of a short documentary film. We will develop ideas and possibilities and then create story boards and scripts.
Everyone involved will be assigned jobs on the crew, from director, camera operator, script supervisor, sound mixer, to many others, who will all help with the production and post-production (editing) of the films we make together. Once you have a feel for what goes into shooting a film we will analyze clips from different films and see how the experts express their ideas. Towards the end of this activity we may develop a longer more involved film using what we learn from the first short film and the analysis of other films.

Yearbook
Member of staff: Mrs. Price and Mr. Carr
The yearbook staff produce a 160 page yearbook which provides a record of the events and activities for the year. We use YearTech Online so you are able to work on the book when you choose, at home. As a member of the yearbook staff, you become involved in all aspects of school and student life as you attend events and chat with students and staff. You develop a variety of skills to enable you to be a photographer, a journalist, a graphic artist, a designer and an editor. Along the way you also learn how to interview people and how to meet deadlines. We meet regularly at agreed times throughout the year from quick lunchtime meetings to after school sessions. This year we will have two retreats in Wengen; one to learn about yearbook and one to help one another complete our pages for the first deadline.

The International Award Scheme
Member of Staff: Mr. Eaton and Ms. Mullen
The Award is tough but it is about individual challenge, not about reaching specific standards set by someone else. IAS participants design their own Award Programme, set their own goals, and record their own progress. The only person they compete against is themselves, by challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve. IAS participants: Discover what they are made of/Make an impact on their community/Develop a set of life skills/Most of all, they have fun! If you would like to read more about the IAS see: http://www.intaward.org/about-the-award/ Mr. Eaton will be giving a presentation to further elaborate on the structure, requirements and to answer any question you may have about the IAS

SAT/ACT Preparation
Thursday afterschool
Member of staff: Ms. Marksteiner and Mrs. Lordet
If you’re planning on college in the US, or even sometimes in the UK, you’ll probably need the SAT or ACT test. This course is a semester long in-house preparation for the January test which we advise Grade 11 students to take in their junior year. Its also a refresher for 12th Graders hoping to improve their scores. We meet for 2 hours on Thursday afternoons alternating with English and Math. With lots of practice on specific Math and English that you’ll need, timed essay-writing, and general tips and skills for successful standardized test taking, our aim is to give you the skills you’ll need to do well on the SAT/ACT.

Environmental Club
Tuesday, 16:15-17:15 (or a suitable day to be negotiated)
Member of staff: Dr. Badcock
The Environment Club is a student led group which is aligned to Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots organization. In the past we raised money for Tchimpounga which looks after chimpanzees orphaned by the bushmeat trade. This year we hope to continue this work linking it to a community education programme. Hopefully, we will also be organizing an environmental conference with invited speakers and a chance to meet other like-minded young people. Students are able to gain community and service hours for some of the club’s activities.

Language Club
Celebrating and sharing our linguistic diversity!
Tuesday lunchtimes from 13:00, Languages 1
Member of Staff: Mrs. Wasner
Here at ISZL we are lucky to have students from all over the world with a wide background of languages and cultures. This club will give our students the opportunity to share their own language experiences with others, through either teaching small groups, tutoring individuals or through a ‘tandem-learning’ experience, where students work in pairs, talking for half of the time in their own native language and the other half in their partner’s language. The club is open to students (and staff!) of all ages, who are interested in either sharing their own language with others, or in learning a new language. Let’s celebrate our linguistic diversity!

Theatre Club

The play itself is still to be chosen, however, a variety of people will be needed to take on the various roles from acting, backstage, set design, stage manager, publicizing and technical crew. Sign up will be in December with rehearsals starting in January.
