Grade 8 Homemade musical instruments - part 2

Viviana Nielsen

Students in Grade 8 Science are building their own DIY musical instrument to apply their knowledge of sound. The guidelines were:

  • to mostly use recycled or sustainable materials;
  • to be cheap to build, sturdy, safe, and visually appealing; and
  • to be able to play a minimum of 3 notes of increasing pitch.

Below four students share their instruments - Ella, Tom, Sofia and Christopher L.

Here Ella describes the challenges of building a flute, and demonstrates the sound.

Here Tom shows the challenges of building a wooden xylophone.

Sofia describes how she built a harp.

Christopher L. explains and plays his harp, which is designed differently to Sofia's.
