Middle School Musical 'The Addams Family'
By Alexis Dahl, Middle School Drama & Arts Subject Coordinator

The ISZL Middle School Drama Club performed 'The Addams Family: Young @ Part' just before the break. Their masterful playing of this dark comedy entertained audiences ranging in age from Primary School years up to grandparents, who arrived from all over the world to support these beloved young performers. The well-polished exterior of this musical show hid the many hours of labour put in by volunteer parents on the costume, make-up and publicity teams, the student set design and construction team led by Stephen York, the backstage running crew that was entirely managed by Middle School students, as well as many other staff, teachers and administrators who gave their time freely to make this show a success. Having become such a tight ensemble over the months of September-April, we all dearly miss our time in the theatre together.

Here two students, Sophie G and Sarah S, reflect on their experience preparing for and performing in the show:

Sophie G, Grade 6: "This year I took part in the Middle School musical 'The Addams Family'. I was an ancestor (chorus) and the Yellow Bird. Throughout this year we have experienced what it felt like to be in a play. We started Drama Club in September. At the beginning, we auditioned. The preparation for this included reading through a script and practising singing. We also worked with people we did not know well to make our cast closer. When we found out we were doing 'The Addams Family', we were all given scripts. We sat in a circle and read out the script to get a feel of the musical. I learned a lot from being in this production. I learned how to read scripts, learn blocking, and how to understand my character.  Overall I think that this musical has taught me so much and I will definitely be doing it again next year!"

Sarah S, Grade 8, writes: "This year, I had the amazing opportunity to be part of the incredible cast for the Middle School musical, 'The Addams Family'. The performances were so much fun for everyone, and we all felt so proud of ourselves at the end. The audiences were so responsive to us, and it felt as if all the work we had put in through the last seven months was for something, not just the student actors, but the stage crew, creative team, and all the teachers that came to supervise. Seeing students come back to the night shows, parents in tow, was so motivating, and I look back fondly on the time where those of us waiting to start the night show were asked for our autographs. We were all so, so devastated when it ended, and there were a few tears and more than a few hugs. However, we will all cherish the memories we have from this experience, and we’ll always remember what it was like to be a part of the Addams family."
