On Friday and Saturday, 11 and 12 January, we hosted our annual Völkl Cup with the biggest number of participants ever. Almost 150 skiers came from Lausanne, Basel and ZIS and ICS. Our team performed very strongly and won both the Junior and Senior categories in the Parallel Slalom and Combi Race. Overall the Eagles scored a total of 645 points, followed by ISL with 423 and ZIS 373 points (individual and team results), and two of the four best skier awards went to Julie RdV and Mats LB (best skier award), both winning a brand new pair of racing skis sponsored by Völkl.
A huge THANK YOU to all our coaches and chaperones who made this weekend of sports possible: Becky Hamilton, Bettina Valissik, Chris Lodge, Jennifer Lowe, Andrew Tewsley, Nacho Garcia, Yannick Dô, Kris Augustin, Laura Carlson, Paul Steffan, Fabio Paron, Eddie Wexler, and Derek Blackmore.
A lot of parents were involved in helping with the running of our Völkl Cup. THANK YOU Kamil Tuma, Nicolas Roelants, Isabel van den Brande, Jacob Aqraou, Rebecca Poehnelt, Kate Whitehurst, Tine and Arne Vraalsen, Joe Belan, Paul and Karen Craig, Eirik Sandvik, Paul Scholten, Kelly and Mike Alkier, Jana Benesowa, Astrid and Knut Pohlen for your excellent support!
And finally another big THANK YOU for supporting me with the logistics and organisation: Dierk Beisel, Kilian Weibel and their team from the Ski School Engelberg for organising the ski race course set up and running of the races. Johny Wyssmüller, Jörg Scheizer and Stephan from Sport-Timing Schönried for the timekeeping, displays and results. Manuela Matter and Christoph Bissig from the Titlis Bergbahnen, Erwin Gabriel from Bärghuis Jochpass and John Felber from Hotel Spannort Inn. A very special Thank You goes to Christoph Bronder and Völkl International for sponsoring this event!
The Völkl Cup is one of the biggest and most difficult events we host during the year, with lots of challenging snow and weather conditions to juggle. We are very happy that we had another successful weekend with lots of happy faces at the end.
Other Sports News
Read here some exciting news from our recent tournaments. A big THANK YOU to our coaches Laura Carlson, Paul Steffan, Yannick Dô and Neil Sanders for taking the teams to Geneva, giving them great coaching and looking well after them!
Middle School Girls Basketball A Team
Coach Paul Steffan: "The girls played in Geneva at the SGIS tournament. With a total of nine teams in the tournament, we had 5 teams in our division. We played our first game against Berne and were able to win 22-14 against a feisty opponent. Our second game saw us play against Nations and we were able to win 33-20. The team started to believe in themselves and this raised their confidence. Unfortunately, due to injury we were down one girl after the second game. In the third game we played CDL and in an important game for the standings the girls were able to win 30-18.
A successful Saturday saw us at 3-0 and this led the way for Sunday morning’s matchup against LGB who were also 3-0. LGB, with two incredible players, continuously pressed us and won 54-19. We ended up second in our division and played ZIS in the semi-finals. It was a tough game and ZIS prevailed 35-17. In the Bronze medal game we played a nail biter against Lausanne and were able to pull it out with a 21-19 victory. Great playmaking, development, and more importantly, amazing spirit made for a special weekend. Go Eagles!"
Coach Laura Carlson: “The Middle School girls basketball teams played in the ISSL (International School Sports League) tournament on Saturday, January 12th. A big congratulations to both A and B teams for their enthusiasm and effort in our first tournament. Players have already shown improvement in their individual and team skills. The A team had some close games and almost captured a win. The B team won 2 out of their 3 games. Well done to all of our players! We’re looking forward to the team playing in the Category SGIS tournament in Geneva the weekend of January 19th! "
Middle School Boys Basketball A Team
Coach Yannick Dô: "After their 1st lost against Nations 1 on Saturday (19-29), the Middle School Basketball Boys came back with 3 consecutive victories against Bern (23-20), ISL (32-14) and LGB (31-9) to reach the 2nd place in their group and go to the semi-finals the next day. After that first long day, we all have a very nice dinner at the restaurant "La Romana" where the boys could relax and recharge their batteries!
We started our second day with our semi-final against CDL and unfortunately a loss... the boys were disappointed but kept in mind that we still had a chance to go home with the 3rd place. After this loss and a good talk with the coaches (Coach Sanders and Coach Do), the boys had their mind back to focus on their next and last game against ZIS. That game led to a large victory and they proudly finished at the 3rd place!
Overall, there was no incident, it was well organised and fair. No one got injured during the tournament (yes !!!) and the boys came back home with good memories and are ready to get back to school on Monday to tell their story. Cheers and go Eagles!"
The weekend prior our Middle School and Varsity boys and girls played their ISSL tournaments. With an impressive performance our Grade 7 and 8 boys won the 1st place travelling plaque, while the Varsity boys and Middle School girls B teams took Runners-up.
