Home About Us Safeguarding

Safeguarding our Community

The safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. We are committed to creating an intentional, caring, and supportive environment that places our learners at the heart of everything we do. This commitment is supported by comprehensive safeguarding measures, including ongoing staff training, regular facility reviews, and proactive policies to ensure a secure environment.

Every ISZL community member is responsible for reporting any concerns related to child safety or protection. To facilitate the reporting process, we use the digital platform MyConcern to track and manage child protection concerns confidentially. Reports are treated with the utmost confidentiality and our Designated Safeguarding Lead and Child Protection Officers work to ensure proper follow-up is completed. For more details, please see our Child Protection Handbook.

If anyone in the ISZL community has concerns about a child or children’s safety, they should email concern@iszl.ch.

Child Protection

ISZL follows the World Health Organization’s definition of child abuse:

Child abuse includes all forms of physical, emotional, and sexual mistreatment, neglect, or failure to prevent harm, leading to actual or potential damage to a child’s health or dignity.

To uphold this, ISZL has created a Child Protection Handbook that outlines our policy. Our goals are to:

  • Support children’s growth, fostering confidence and independence.
  • Ensure children feel safe, valued, and comfortable reaching out to adults.
  • Raise awareness among all staff about safeguarding responsibilities and how to report concerns.
  • Monitor at-risk children and contribute to their support plans.
  • Establish a clear process for handling suspected abuse or safeguarding concerns.
  • Work closely with external agencies like the Police and Social Care.
  • Ensure all staff who work with children undergo background checks, including international checks when necessary.

Melissa Bland

Primary School Principal

Mel joined ISZL in 2024 as the new Primary School Principal.

Her previous role was Foundation Principal at Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School in Auckland, New Zealand. Mel led her former school from its establishment to an enrolment of over 1,000 students.

Mel’s experience spans from New Zealand to international schools globally [Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan], to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. She has also worked leading early childhood centres, as her belief is that a primary principal needs to know the whole journey for our youngest learners.

The children are the best part of a school day for her and she thrives when she feels connected with those she works with and the community in which she is based.

Mel is here with her partner Mike and their dog Nikau. The kids are all grown up — one in Melbourne and one in Brisbane. They are also grandparents to the “Tornado,” Halo, who is three years old. Mike is a Health & PE teacher with a passion for coaching.

Mel was born and raised in New Zealand however she is also deeply rooted in her Fijian heritage from her mother’s side of the family. In her free time, Mel loves to go for long dog walks, go shoe shopping and watch the game of rugby in any form.
