Learning in the Primary School is guided by the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). As an IB World School, we are committed to a curriculum that encourages curiosity, agency, and connection to the world around us.
We believe children are capable and curious learners who actively shape their own learning. They make choices, take action, and reflect on their own personal growth. This approach encourages a learning environment built on trust, collaboration, and meaningful relationships.
We see parents as essential collaborators in the learning journey, and together we work to create a strong, supportive relationship where every child is valued and challenged.
Our Approach to the PYP Curriculum
We use ISZL’s own scope and sequence to guide learning through all subjects with articulated learning outcomes. Parents can view our full curriculum in the Parent Portal.
The Primary School Curriculum
Our programme is built on the PYP framework, which supports students in developing:
- Knowledge
- Conceptual understandings
- Skills
- Attitudes and Mindsets
- Action

Learning Within and Across Subjects
These elements are developed through six transdisciplinary themes, also known as Units of Inquiry (UOIs), that connect learning across six subject areas.
Whenever possible, subject-specific content is integrated into these inquiry-based units.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Students learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) in the Primary School are supported through a clear and progressive three-phased pathway designed to build language confidence.
Beginning with a focus on everyday communication, students gradually develop the language needed to participate fully in school and social life. As their confidence grows, they expand their vocabulary, expand their understanding, and begin to express ideas more independently across a range of contexts. Over time, they engage with more complex language and academic concepts, with support tailored to their individual needs.
By the advanced stage, students are working alongside their peers at grade level, with guidance and adjustments in place where needed. Throughout this journey, EAL and homeroom teachers work closely together to ensure each student feels supported.
Learn more about EAL in the Student Services Support Handbook.
Language
Language is at the heart of learning. It connects subjects, supports inquiry, and helps students express their thinking and share their stories. In our classrooms, language learning is joyful and engaging, often explored through literature, discussion, and creative expression.
German
Our additional language programme in German aims to help students build multilingual skills and intercultural understanding. Learning another language deepens their appreciation of different cultures and perspectives, and supports students in feeling more connected to Switzerland.
Mathematics
Mathematics is grounded in real-life experiences. Students build understanding by exploring patterns, making connections, and solving problems. We encourage them to develop mathematical thinking through hands-on activities, inquiry, and realistic contexts.
Science
Science is about wonder, exploration, and discovery. Students investigate the world around them, ask questions, and test ideas. They learn scientific concepts and skills while developing a way of thinking that is both curious and reflective.
Social studies
Social Studies helps students understand the world from multiple perspectives. By exploring culture, human systems, and geography, they develop a well-rounded appreciation for how people live, work, and interact with one another. These concepts are explored through the Units of Inquiry.
Arts
The Arts are a core part of every student’s learning journey. Through music, visual arts, dance, and drama, children express themselves, explore their identities, and connect with others. We encourage creativity in all its forms, and the arts are integrated into our Units of Inquiry whenever possible.
Outdoor Learning
Our privileged location in Central Switzerland offers unique opportunities for outdoor learning.
From forest walks to hands-on activities in nature, students explore their environment through the lens of inquiry, strengthening their connection to the natural world.
