The ISZL Story

The International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) has a deeply rooted history in the canton of Zug in Central Switzerland, where our story began long before we ever embraced the name ISZL.

For more than 60 years, ISZL has maintained a commitment to providing an exceptional academic experience alongside a variety of diverse activities and outdoor adventures.

What began as a small tutoring group for 14 students has grown into an expansive multicampus community, now serving over 1,200 students from more than 60 countries.

ISZL is proud to create lasting connections among former students, parents, and staff who share cherished memories and a shared commitment to shaping the school’s future.

Our Origins

What connection could an American car manufacturer possibly have with a school in Switzerland? At first glance, it might seem unlikely. However, in the late 1950s, the Willys Motor Company established a Jeep manufacturing plant in Zug, bringing American employees and their families to the area.

The journey to becoming ISZL started with a small tutoring group for 14 American children of Willy’s employees who required an English-language education. The Zug American School, also known as the Jeep American School, found its first home in the historic Felberhaus, a late Gothic building with a distinctive stepped roofline, now a protected cultural site. Located above the Felber family’s concrete-pipe business, the school embraced its unique setting. Without modern intercoms, students took turns ringing the lunch bell — a cherished daily ritual. “It was so much fun to ring the bell!” recalls former student Robert Gottschalk.

1960s

1962

In 1962, as new families from Kodak, Eastman, and Johnson & Johnson made Zug their new home, the need for English language education grew. Enter Anita and Gwyn Bevan, who arrive as teachers at what was affectionately known as “Willy’s School.”

1964

When Willys-Overland Motors announced its closure in 1964, the future of our school was uncertain. Recognising this important crossroad, and at the encouragement of parents, Anita and Gwyn took over the operations of Willy’s School, and renamed it the Zug Anglo-American School.

1968

Over the course of 1968 to the mid 1970s, the campus was relocated to Gotthardstrasse, with a later extension to Alpenstrasse, to accommodate the growing community — a step that not only reinforced our commitment to providing a comfortable space for all students, but a commitment to continuing to offer English language instruction to families in the canton of Zug.

1969

In May 1969, a creative lesson took an unexpected turn. While filming a mock bank robbery for a class project, two students, donning their fathers’ hats, entered a local bank. Though they quickly left, the hats sparked alarm, and the police — with a labelled machine gun in tow — arrived on the scene. Teacher Gwyn Bevan smoothed things over, but not before receiving a 100 CHF fine for “lack of forethought.” The incident became infamous, earning local headlines and even praise from local newspaper Blick for the school’s innovative approach.

1970s

1977

In 1977, Willy’s School, then comprised of seven teachers and 65 students, found a new home in the historic former Swiss Post Office PTT (Postal, Telegraph, and Telephone) building in Cham. The following year, in 1978, the inaugural “Games Day” was held — now known as our much-loved International Day.

1980s

1980

The 1980s were a transformational period for the school, truly laying the foundation for our future as ISZL. In 1983, while Mr. Bevan stepped down to focus on the financial side of operations, Martin Latter took over as Director, bringing with him a fresh energy and vision for the community. By 1987, under Martin’s leadership, the school was renamed as the “International School of Zug” (ISOZ).

Martin also founded the first “Field Week,” what we now know and love as “Personal Development Week (PDW),” which was held in various Swiss locales such as Leysin.

1990s

1990

The 1990s were a decade of significant growth and innovation as both the campus and educational offerings were expanded to better serve the needs of the community.

In 1990, the 25-student Riverside School was founded in Gattikon, Zürich, establishing a pathway for university preparation with the College Board’s Advanced Placement® (AP) program. Meanwhile, as the student population at the International School of Zug continued to grow, additional space on Landis-Gyr-Strasse was acquired in 1995. In 1997, the school made a pivotal move to Walterswil, where ISOZ introduced a structured Grade 8 Middle School programme.

1997

In early 1997, the Catholic boarding school in Walterswil, Baar, closed its doors due to low enrolment.

Owned by the Don Bosco Foundation, the site, with its spacious grounds and pastoral setting, caught the eye of Martin Latter, who saw it as a perfect new home for the International School of Zug. Reflecting on his 24 years at the school, Mr. Latter often spoke of its “Facets of a Diamond,” with each unique angle contributing to its brilliance. One of his favourites? The “birthday stone,” an idea he cherished to celebrate each child’s birthday in a meaningful way.

2000s

2000–2007

In the 2000s, ISOZ and the Riverside School were recognised as fully-accredited learning institutions. In 2001, ISOZ proudly became the first school in Switzerland authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) and IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). In 2007, the Riverside High School was authorised to administer the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP).

In 2006, in response to a demand for English-language education for residents of the neighbouring canton Luzern, the 12-student International School of Luzern was founded as a sister school, and was housed at Krämerstein Villa under Angela Hollington.

2008

2008 ushered in a series of changes that represent the most important year in our history, highlighted by the merger of the International School of Zug, the International School of Luzern, and the Riverside School to form what we are known as today: the International School of Zug and Luzern.

This historic merger was followed by the acquisition of our much-loved outdoor education centre, Chalet Bergheim, in Wengen; the birth of our mission statement, “Respect, Motivate, Achieve;” and the welcoming of Dominic Currer as ISZL’s new Director.

2010s

2010–2020

2010 saw the continued expansion of ISZL’s footprint in Zug with the opening of the Baarburg building, a dedicated space for our Middle School students; and the new Riverside campus in Hünenberg, our home for High School students.

In 2013, we celebrated the completion of our triple-gym at the Riverside campus, which quickly became an activity hub for sports and community events.

The defining feature of the second half of the 2010s was ISZL’s commitment to environmental sustainability, marked by the following initiatives:

— Youth Forum Switzerland, one of the largest student-led summits in the country, was founded in 2016 by three ISZL students
—The aquaponics system was established at the Riverside campus
— In 2018, our “Carbon Credit Fund” was founded by the student-led ISZL Sustainability Initiative, providing a hassle-free way to offset our carbon footprint through support of offsetting projects
— In 2019, 34,500 birch and spruce trees were planted in the south-east of Iceland by 16 students as the first major contribution to ISZL’s carbon neutrality goal; while ISZL’s bus fleet began the transition to electrically powered vehicles.

As ISZL Director Dominic Currer prepared to step down, these ambitious sustainability initiatives called for a leader with a similarly visionary outlook. In 2017, Barry Dequanne took the helm of Director, succeeding Dominic and embracing our commitment to a sustainable and forward-thinking future.

2020s

2020–2025

To support the growth of our High School student population, the school rented additional spaces around the main Riverside campus giving students the space needed to excel.

On the Zug Campus, and in collaboration with our landlords, a new car park and astroturf sports area was built at the back of the campus. The Parents’ Association was able to utilise this expanded space to make International Day bigger and better, whilst also giving student service learning groups the opportunity to showcase their charitable causes.

Director Barry Dequanne announced plans to build a brand new, state-of-the-art Middle School campus next to the High School in Hünenberg, slated for opening in 2028.

November 2024 marked a major milestone for sustainability at ISZL, as the Riverside campus celebrated the completion of solar panel installations on the Triple Gym rooftop. The installation includes 620 modules covering a surface area of 1,208.93 m². Once fully operational, the solar panels are expected to have an annual energy output of 283,408.56 kWh, with a CO₂ savings of approximately 32,276.30 kg per year.
