Wellbeing in High School

We understand that students excel when they feel safe, valued, and supported. In High School, our approach to wellbeing is holistic, recognising the importance of emotional, social, and physical health. Through strong relationships, dedicated guidance, and a caring community, we help students build the confidence and skills they need to navigate their teenage years and prepare for life beyond school.

Four Pillars of Wellbeing

class study at high school

At ISZL, we are guided by promoting the four pillars of wellbeing: awareness, insight, connection and purpose.

  1. Awareness reminds us of the importance of cultivating focus, attention and awareness of ourselves.
  2. Insight reminds us of how self-knowledge of our emotions, thoughts and beliefs shape our experiences and sense of identity.
  3. Purpose reminds us of how to continually explore our core values and deeper motivations to apply ourselves in daily life.
  4. Connection reminds us of how a feeling of care and friendship towards other people promotes supportive relationships and interactions.

Small Homeroom Groups

Our small homeroom groups bring these pillars to life. Through daily one-to-one mentoring, connection-building games, grade-level assemblies and circle discussions, students develop self-awareness, empathy, and confidence.

Whether reflecting on their values, learning how to build healthy relationships or exploring personal goals, students are actively engaging with each of the four pillars.

Personal Development Week

Each year, students take part in a residential week designed to extend learning beyond the classroom, with grade-level trips across Europe and beyond. These shared experiences focus on developing teamwork, leadership, and a deeper awareness of social and environmental responsibility — laying the foundation for project-based service learning throughout the year. By building independence, strengthening friendships, and creating meaningful connections with staff, these trips help set a positive tone for the year ahead, while supporting learning in real-world settings.

We are also fortunate to have a school chalet in Wengen, which hosts a variety of trips throughout the year. These include hikes for The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, instrumental retreats, and ski trips.

Student Learning Support Services

  • Our High School Learning Support team works alongside students, teachers, and families to understand individual needs and provide tailored guidance. This may include in-class support, small group sessions, or one-to-one instruction. When a learning difference or health condition is identified, the team develops a personalised learning plan to help each student succeed.
  • Our trained mental health professionals play a key role in student wellbeing. They help students navigate challenges, build resilience, and set personal goals. They also contribute to the PSHE programme and provide staff with strategies to further support students’ social and emotional development.
  • Registered nurses are on campus throughout the school day to care for students’ health needs. They manage first response for injuries and minor illnesses, offer medical advice and referrals when needed, and ensure a safe and supportive environment for all. Every ISZL staff member is also certified in First Aid, reinforcing our commitment to student safety.
