A Passion to Innovate: Aquaponics at ISZL

ISZL is now harnessing the power of the sun, with new solar panels installed on campus — driven by our students’ vision for a more sustainable future.
We are proud to share a significant milestone in ISZL’s ongoing sustainability journey. In partnership with Swiss Renewable Solutions AG (SRS), we have successfully completed the installation of solar panels on the roof of the High School’s Triple Gym. Since 11 November 2024, the system has been fully operational — quietly generating clean, renewable energy every day.
The numbers speak for themselves: 620 panels now span more than 1,200 square metres, with an expected annual output of over 283,000 kWh. Not only will this significantly reduce our environmental footprint, but it will also lower energy costs immediately and for many years to come — all at no financial cost to ISZL.
But this project is about more than just solar panels.
Our community’s commitment to sustainability is long-standing and student-led. Since 2018, Youth Forum Switzerland (YFS) has provided a platform for students to move from discussion to action. In 2019, the YFS Initiatives Team was formed, leading to projects like the Zero Carbon Initiative. This work has already brought charging stations for staff vehicles and electric vehicles for campus transport — and now, solar panels to power our facilities.
Learning at ISZL doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Our students care deeply about the world around them, and they’re already making a difference. With the sun now helping to power part of our campus, it’s clear that their ideas — and actions — are having a real impact.
