Director’s Welcome

ISZL School Director, wearing glasses and a light blue shirt, stands outdoors with his hands resting on a wooden railing.

Welcome to the International School of Zug and Luzern

From School Director, Barry Dequanne

It is a privilege to serve as Director of the International School of Zug and Luzern, a community that has been inspiring young people since 1961.

From the moment you step onto our campuses, you can feel the warmth and energy of a diverse community where students, families, and staff from around the world come together to learn, grow, and support one another. Every day, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of such an inclusive and welcoming environment.

My Vision for the Future of ISZL

I believe schools should be places of possibility, where young people discover their passions, embrace challenge, and use their learning to make a meaningful impact in the world. This belief continues to guide our work at ISZL.

As an International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School, we are committed to an education that balances academic rigour with personal growth. This ensures our students are well prepared not only for future opportunities, but also for the responsibilities that come with being thoughtful, compassionate global citizens.

We are fortunate to call Central Switzerland home. Our unique alpine setting offers extraordinary opportunities for connection and discovery. Whether students are studying ecosystems in our forest classrooms, collaborating with local partners, or participating in global initiatives such as Youth Forum Switzerland, they see their learning come to life and understand the difference they can make.

I believe the best way to prepare our children is by helping them build strong academic and social foundations grounded in creativity, empathy, and integrity. These are the qualities that will always matter.

Barry Dequanne

Our school values guide us every day

  • We respect. We show empathy and are inclusive and thoughtful in our interactions with others. Every person is valued and valuable.
  • We motivate. We inspire one another and grow by building on our individual and collective passions.
  • We achieve. We create an exceptional learning environment focused on academic success and holistic development.

Together, these values remind us that education is as much about who we become as what we learn.

Looking Ahead

The world our students will inherit is changing rapidly, and it is natural for parents to wonder what the future will hold. As the father of two young and imaginative children, I share both the excitement and the uncertainty.

Over the next five years, our vision is to continue building a school that cultivates character, curiosity, and resilience while preparing students to thrive in a world of constant change.

In my role as President of the Board of Trustees for the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE), I engage with thought leaders and schools worldwide. This global perspective reinforces my confidence that ISZL is well-positioned not only to benefit from emerging educational insights but also to contribute to shaping the future of international education.

This is what I believe the future of education requires: schools that combine academic excellence with environments that support wellbeing, belonging, and growth. At ISZL, we are creating a learning experience where students build the knowledge, character, and confidence to make a difference in their own way. Ultimately, we want to fulfil our mission to make the world, or at least our corner of it, a better, kinder place.

An Invitation

It is a privilege to be part of a community where students, families, and staff come together with such purpose and care.

I warmly invite you to visit our campuses, explore our website, and most importantly, meet the people who make ISZL such a special place.
