Middle School Competitive Sports
We believe sport plays a vital role in supporting our students’ social, emotional, and physical well-being. It’s an important part of a well-rounded education, helping students build confidence and learn the value of teamwork.
Our Competitive Sports programme complements both the academic experience and our wider Activities and Clubs offering, encouraging students to grow and challenge themselves in meaningful ways.
Across the year, students can take part in a variety of seasonal sports, with regular training sessions led by dedicated coaches. They also have the opportunity to represent ISZL in fixtures, tournaments, meets, and races, both locally and internationally, building skills, friendships, and school spirit along the way.
Our Athletic Department offers a diverse range of seasonal sports that complement our recreational Activities and Clubs programme. Students benefit from regular training sessions and have the opportunity to take part in fixtures, tournaments, meets, and races throughout the year, both in Switzerland and beyond.
We are proud to participate in several prestigious sports organisations, including Jugend und Sport (J+S), the International School Sports League (ISSL), the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS), and the European Sports Conference (ESC). Through these partnerships, we ensure high-quality coaching, competition, and a commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles among youth.
To support our student athletes in developing their skills year-round, we offer optional off-season training programmes for select sports. These are available for a fee and designed to complement the competitive season. For example, our Fall and Spring Swim Training sessions help students prepare for the Winter Swim Team.
We value sport as an essential part of a well-rounded education. It’s not just about physical activity — it’s about learning to work as a team, showing respect, and growing through both success and challenge. Our coaches are more than just trainers; they’re mentors who help students develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of fair play. Whether it’s celebrating a win or learning from a tough match, the lessons students take from sport stay with them long after the final whistle.
Each year, we strive to achieve the following goals:
For all competitive sports, we expect regular attendance and full participation. Team selections are based on performance, effort, attitude, and commitment, with the possibility of adjustments throughout the season.
If you love sport but don’t want to play competitively, we have a range of recreational sporting activities as part of our non-competitive clubs and activities.
